Eating Local...

May 13, 2010

SO...I am on a mission to eat locally.  I am doing this for so many reasons, it's healthier as our foods have more nutrients when purchased as close as possible to harvest.  It is better for our economy and it is better for our environment in that it reduces shipping thus our use of foreign oil and the best part is it supports our local farms who support buy from other local stores.

That said we are also growing a garden that is turning out pretty well as shown in the picture, but until we are able to actually harvest (Lord willing) we are buying from local farms through a few companies/CSA type providers.  We tired Papa Spuds buta lot of what they had was not local so we decided not to continue to buy from them.  We have now settled into Carolina Grown who also provides meat, eggs, cheese and honey as an option and the produce box who gives a choice of 2 boxes that are premade and anoption to add a few things to that premade box.

So far we are happy with Carolina Grown but SUPER happy with The Produce Box!  They provide so much for...

Teething Toby...

March 31, 2010

So both of my little ones are teething but primarily Toby is teething and showing it!  He has been biting everything in sight and waking a night A LOT!  We have tried the Baltic Amber teething necklaces and they seem to be working.

They are no miracle workers mind you, but I am up only 1 or 2 times per night versus 4 to 6 times...sooo I would say that is an improvement...worht every penny!

Here are some pictures of the babes in baltic amber!

How To Have A Happy Kid?? Hmm?

March 26, 2010

I saw a commercial yesterday that said to go to their website to learn how to have a "happy" kid, and it kind rubbed me the wrong way.  Not because I don't think kids shouldn't be happy...I am all for happy kids, it makes my life a lot easier.  I guess it rubbed me wrong because it implied that you can make kids happy and that they should always be happy.  I mean none of us can always be happy and you can never MAKE someone happy, your kids included.

IMO making sure they are safe and cared for and raised to be a productive person in the world with good morals comes first and happiness can be a by product if they chose.  For example, it makes my kids happy to not do homework, not do the dishes or clean their room, my 21 month old likes to poke her baby brother's eyes, and my 7 yr old would watch Hannah Montana all day and eat junk food , but none of that can happen.  I see ourselves living in a world full of happiness seekers and not enough people looking for satisfaction in the blessings around them.  The...

Strange Bed Fellow...Sweet Company

March 21, 2010

So tonight everyone is tucked in their beds...early and very tired from a long day of playing outside in this glorious Spring weather.  The teething necklaces are helping but not curing the little teething babes.  They are still waking at night but far less than they were.

So my strange little bed fellow is my sweet little Tobias.  As I type and nurse him to sleep I realize what a sweet little bit of company he is to me in the late hours.  I love our moments when all are sleeping and just he and I can hang out and snuggle, nurse and bond.  It makes me wonder when all my children are grown who will be the one to come sit with me and have a cup of tea or coffee and be a bit of sweet company to me.  I hope against all hope it will be all of my children at different times discussing so many different subjects.  Much like they do now, only not all at once. Each one telling me their own story about their life that I am not very surprised at all about but am still careful not to let them know it.

Do you suppose...

Sleeping Like A Baby...

March 19, 2010

I am so tired today!  My oldest two kids are sick with fevers and sore throats and my youngest two LO were up all night teething with fevers... there must be a better way to get your frist set of teeth...ya know???

So I am relying (and it's working so far) on Tylenol and Gentle Naturals Teething drops to give me some -very short bouts of much needed rest.  The problem is the meds seem to wain after about 3 hours and thus I end up with very little sleep.  I am getting some Baltic Amber teething necklaces ( http://sweetbottomsbaby.com/teething-necklaces-baltic-amber-necklaces-c-16_21.html) to see how they work...I am very excited to try them!

Info on Baltic Amber Teehters: http://sweetbottomsbaby.com/index.php?page=amberfaqs

That said... I am glad to trade some sleep for my precious children...after all sleep will always be there, but my young ones will one day be grown ones...

Onions!

March 16, 2010

Spring just brings out everything a nature girl loves...even the birds in the morning are screaming SPRING SPRING SPRING rather than TWEET TWEET TWEET...

So we are trying our hand at gardening AGAIN!  I have never had so much trouble with a garden in my life...keeping in mind that I am from SO Cal...where the soil..isn't...it is sand, and yet i had a lovely garden...I have even had a garden on the deck of my apartment...here in Raleigh, NC I should have no trouble but I have.

So this year we tested the PH, put lime into the soil and this weekend planted 75 onion sets!  I have learned recently that onions are very good for you.  We use them in just about everything we cook so I am thinking 75 may not be enough..haha...

We are also planting the rest of our spring garden with peas, spinache, lettuce, radish carrots and beets!  I am very anxious for the beets...I have never even eaten them...shame on me...I will definately post the end results of this spring fling in my garden bed!

A Blog

March 12, 2010

Wow, well here it is...my first Blog.  Seems a little, well actually very, self centered.  But I was thinking that I have a lot topics I like to talk about so why not put them in a Blog?

What has kept me from blogging before? TIME!  Seriously my time is so stretched...and yet I would not trade my life for anything in the world.

So as time today is short, of course, this Blog will be also...short.

Next topic...My Garden!
